And just like that, my friends, it’s finally October! I would like to know where the time has gone because, now, I’m planning Autumn and holiday recipes. Partially, I must admit, it’s also my fault for going on hiatus for months. However, I think it’s the best time to come back because of all the fun content I get to create! Bonus points, it is my favorite time of the year.

While I don’t experience Autumn in a tropical island (of Guam), I’m more than allowed to make my entire house smell like warming spices and vanilla spiced scented candles from here and out. And I am giving you the permission to do so, too! Do it!

But you know what’s also useful during this time of the year? Creating your own holiday spice mix!

I don’t know were you may be coming from (in any part of the world) but where I am, purchasing a pre-mix of warming spices can cost as much as buying a decent meal at a fast food chain. Ten-dollar pumpkin spice mix for a 0.67oz? I’m not going to even try. So I made it a thing this year – to make sure I make my own spice mix for the sake of saving myself the hassle. And this is where this recipe comes in. Yippidie yieee!

WHAT IS CHAI SPICE MIX?

Chai spice mix is a blend of cinnamon, ginger, all spice, clove, cardamom, black pepper, and occasionally star anise and nutmeg. The term chai is taken from the Hindu word cha for “tea”. This spice mix is often brewed in black tea and milk or masala chai.

Are chai spice and pumpkin spice the same?

Close! But not exactly to the tea. See what I did there? The only main difference is that chai spice contains cardamom. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get away by using chai spice mix in your pumpkin flavored goodies! Most pumpkin drinks and desserts are very much infused with chai spices with the addition of nutmeg. Personally, chai blend has a sweeter, aromatic, floral note compared to a pumpkin spice blend. And I do prefer it. For most, you probably won’t even tell a difference. So why not just make this for multi-purpose reasons.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

This mix will only take you five minutes to make! It’s that easy. Here are the ingredients:

  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Ground Ginger
  • Ground All Spice
  • Ground Clove
  • Ground Cardamom
  • Ground Black Peppercorn

Blend it all together and you’ve got yourself a chai spice mix! Store in a small glass container or seasoning jar and in the fridge/freezer to keep it fresh. Inside the fridge/freezer can last up to six months. But I’m sure, if you made it here, you will be using it all throughout the season!
